Emergency Snow Bulletin / School Bus Transportation

EMERGENCY BULLETIN
HIGHLINE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
2016-17

In the event of snow, windstorms, earthquake, or similar events, Highline Public Schools may change school start or dismissal times for student safety. We will communicate school schedule changes through:
  • Mobile app alerts - Download our mobile app by searching for Highline Public Schools in the app store.
  • Automated phone calls - Please ensure your contact information is up to date at your child’s school.
  • Announcements on TV and radio - A list of participating stations is provided below.
  • Announcements on district and school websites – www.highlineschools.org
  • Email - Please ensure your contact information is up to date at your child’s school.
  • Twitter – Follow us on Twitter at @highlineschools.
  • Facebook – Find us on Facebook at \highlineschools.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  • School schedule change announcements apply for that day only.
  • If no announcement is made by Highline during a weather event, schools and buses are operating normally.
  • Check for announcements throughout the day. If conditions change rapidly or unexpectedly, we may need to make a quick decision to cancel school or send students home early.
  • Keep in mind that some areas of the district experience more severe weather and driving conditions than others.  School closures and schedule changes are district-wide, even if your neighborhood is not severely impacted.
  • Please DO NOT CALL the transportation office, your school, district offices, or the media. Calls divert staff from responding to the current situation.

The 5 most common announcements related to weather events are:
  1. LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION
Emergency bus stops (listed on following pages) will be used both morning and afternoon. If the weather allows for regular bus stops in the afternoon, the change will be announced before dismissal time. Schools will be open at their regularly scheduled time unless the message specifies “Two Hours Late.”
  2. TWO HOURS LATE
This means buses will begin their first route two hours late but at regularly scheduled stops UNLESS the message specifies LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION. No breakfast, morning classes for preschool, ECEAP, or PSSC.  Schools will be dismissed at their regular times.
  3. SCHOOLS CLOSED
This means all Highline schools are closed for ALL regular and/or special program students. All scheduled activities, meetings, and athletics are also canceled or postponed. NO transportation will be provided to schools outside of our district even though they may be open that day. District administrative offices remain open.
  4. SCHOOLS CLOSED – INCLUDING ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES
This means that all Highline schools and administrative offices are closed. No transportation will be provided to schools outside of our district.
  5. EVENING ACTIVITIES CANCELED
If travel conditions become hazardous after school has been dismissed, evening meetings and activities may be canceled.

IMPORTANT - DEVELOP A FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN
Each family should have a plan covering what to do when children arrive home early due to an emergency situation. Situations which should be covered include:
  • Are the students prepared with warm clothing, including gloves, hats, and boots?
  • What is the best route home if your student cannot be delivered to the normal bus stop?
  • Where could your child go if he/she needs help?
  • Who will care for your child until you arrive home?
  • Who can your child call if he/she feels afraid?
