Mastery by Grade 3

At least 19 out of 20 students entering kindergarten in 2013 will meet or exceed standards in all code subjects by the end of Grade 3.

Mastery by Grade 3 Highline is pushing hard to get all students at or above grade level by Grade 3. It's the first of our big strategic goalsSo, what's the big deal about third grade?

It may be hard to believe, but research shows that students who are on grade level by the end of third grade are far more likely to graduate from high school than those who are behind.

That's why we are so committed to getting all students at or above grade level by the end of third grade, regardless of where they were when they started as kindergarten students.

Our ultimate goal is to graduate students prepared for college, career, and citizenship. To get there, we have to start at the beginning. That means a lot of hard work in our elementary schools.

We've implemented full-day kindergarten for all students and adopted a new curriculum. We are also investing in our teachers by providing intensive professional learning opportunities with a focus on teacher collaboration and close tracking of students' progress.

We can't do this work alone. That's why we've partnered with local early learning  programs and organizations. Childcare centers and preschools join our teachers for professional learning and align their early learning programs with our schools.
